Statistics on Manifolds and Landmarks Based Image Analysis: A Nonparametric Theory with Applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
This article provides an exposition of some recent developments in nonparametric inference on manifolds, along with a brief account of an emerging theory on data analysis on stratified spaces. Much of the theory is developed around the notion of Fréceht means with applications, for the most part, to landmark based shape spaces. A number of applications are illustrated with real data in such areas as paleomagnetism, morphometrics and medical diagnostics. Connections to scene recognition and machine vision are also explored. ∗Research supported by N S F Grants DMS-0806011, DMS-1107053 †Research supported by N S F Grants DMS-0805977, DMS-1106935

Statistical Analysis on Manifolds: A Nonparametric Approach for Inference on Shape Spaces
This article concerns nonparametric statistics on manifolds with special emphasis on landmark based shape spaces in which a k-ad, i.e., a set of k points or landmarks on an object or a scene, is observed in 2D or 3D, for purposes of identification, discrimination, or diagnostics. Two different notions of shape are considered: reflection shape invariant under all translations, scaling and orthog...
متن کاملProjective shape manifolds and coplanarity of landmark configurations. A nonparametric approach
This is a paper in 2D projective shape statistical analysis, with an application to face analysis. We test nonparametric methodology for an analysis of shapes of almost planar configurations of landmarks on real scenes from their regular camera pictures. Projective shapes are regarded as points on projective shape manifolds. Using large sample and nonparametric bootstrap methodology for intrins...
متن کاملNonparametric statistics on manifolds
This article presents certain recent methodologies and some new results for the statistical analysis of probability distributions on manifolds. An important example considered in some detail here is the 2-D shape space of k-ads, comprising all configurations of k planar landmarks (k > 2)-modulo translation, scaling and rotation.
متن کاملNonparametric Statistics on Manifolds with Applications to Shape Spaces
This thesis presents certain recent methodologies and some new results for the statistical analysis of probability distributions on non-Euclidean manifolds. The notions of Fréchet mean and variation as measures of center and spread are introduced and their properties are discussed. The sample estimates from a random sample are shown to be consistent under fairly broad conditions. Depending on t...
متن کاملThe Florida State University College of Arts and Sciences Statistical Shape Analysis on Manifolds with Applications to Planar Contours and Structural Proteomics
The technological advances in recent years have produced a wealth of intricate digital imaging data that is analyzed effectively using the principles of shape analysis. Such data often lies on either high-dimensional or infinite-dimensional manifolds. With computing power also now strong enough to handle this data, it is necessary to develop theoretically-sound methodology to perform the analys...
